ABOUT US

	Edwina McPhail Worley, Owner/Director

Children and adults throughout Austin have been studying at Shirley McPhail School of Dance since 1970, when Shirley Wood McPhail started her dance studio, most likely never dreaming the impact it would have on Austin through the years. Literally tens of thousands of students have crossed the doors of SMSD, and an unbelievable number have returned, to dance again themselves and/or to bring their children and even their grandchildren!

Miss Shirley’s philosophy and high standards have continued through the efforts of her daughter, Edwina McPhail Worley, who became Owner/Director of the studio in 1997. Edwina and her staff of dedicated dance professionals teach all traditional forms of dance and emphasize the development of mental and physical growth, coordination, poise, and grace of each individual.

When children enter an SMSD dance studio, our goal is that they:
1. enjoy themselves
2. feel they are in a safe environment where they are well care for and nurtured
3. learn the proper techniques of dance at whatever level they are studying.

SMSD, however, is not only a dance facility for children. The adult program is extensive, with classes in tap, ballet, and jazz for adults of all ages and levels.

	Larry McPhail has been involved at SMSD since its inception. Wife Judy (Edwina calls her her "Bonus Mom") joined the family and the business in 1999.

With two dance studio locations in the northwest section of Austin, Texas, a variety of skill level dance classes are offered in tap, ballet, jazz, lyrical, pointe, and hip hop. In addition, classes in musical theater are offered for ages 5-12. Each spring and fall we offer a Cotillion Austin-Style class for boys and girls ages 10-13.

Prospective students are encouraged to try out a class—to find a fit—and to begin experiencing Miss Shirley’s “joy of dance!
