ABOUT US

When children enter our studio, it is our goal that they
(1) enjoy themselves,
(2) feel they are in a safe environment where they are well cared-for and nurtured, and
(3) learn the proper techniques of dance at whatever level they are studying.

We are proud of our reputation in Austin of being a first-class dance school. All traditional dances are taught, as well as a major emphasis on adult dance, especially tap. We are dedicated to the task of not only teaching dance, but also nurturing the development of the mental and physical growth, coordination, poise, and grace of each individual.

The Shirley McPhail School of Dance has been teaching dance to children and adults since 1970. Literally tens of thousands of students have crossed our door, and many have returned—bringing their children—and grandchildren!

Shirley’s daughter, Edwina McPhail Worley, became Owner/Director of the Shirley McPhail School of Dance in 1997. Edwina and her staff of dedicated professionals continue the legacy of “Miss Shirley” by sharing the joy of dance with patience and caring.

With two locations in the Northwest section of Austin, Texas, a variety of skill level dance classes are offered in tap, ballet, pointé, jazz, lyrical dance, hip-hop, and Pilates. Classes in Cotillion are available for 5th and 6th grade boys and girls, as well as musical theater classes for ages 5-12. Adult dance classes are available at both dance studio locations.

Shirley Wood McPhail

1932-1997

Shirley Wood McPhail started SMSD in 1970. “Miss Shirley’s” philosophy of teaching children and the high standards she set for the studio will continue as they have since 1970. Her legacy of sharing the joy of dance lives on through her daughter, Edwina McPhail Worley, President of SMSD, LLC.
