Shirley McPhail School of Dance has children's dance classes
in ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, hip hop, lyrical jazz, and contemporary,
as well as musical theatre and Cotillion. Younger dance students
(3 years and up) are placed in combination classes where they
experience tap, ballet, and tumbling. Older children are placed
in classes according to age, dance experience, and ability.
New students are encouraged throughout the year, especially
in January, when new dance classes are often formed. To learn

It's never too late to begin dance classes! Shirley McPhail
School of Dance has approximately 100 adults taking dance classes
in: tap, ballet, jazz, hip-hop, contemporary, Ballet Shape,
and yoga. The atmosphere is fun and relaxed, and classes are
open in all levels (beginners, intermediate, and advanced) for
both men and women of ANY age. Both dance studio locations have
numerous class times to hopefully fit your schedule. For more

The spring class will begin February 5th, 2012. SMSD Cotillion
students learn how to act and to treat others with honor, dignity
and respect, resulting in better relationships with family,

"Miss Shirley's
Girlies" Participate in
Susan G. Komen Walk |
 Several
SMSD staff and students participated in the Susan G. Komen Walk
on Sunday, Nov. 13. The SMSD team, "Miss Shirley's Girlies."
walked in memory of our founder, Shirley McPhail, who lost her
battle with breast cancer in 1997. Pictured here are Laure Kersch,
Gary Kersch, and Jennifer Hutchison, who joined the 19,000 who
were involved. The funds go for local breast health services
as well as research provided by the national Komen Grants Program.
As this photo shows, you didn't have to be a girl to be a Miss
Shirley's Girlie! Thanks to those who participated--let's have
an even larger group next year! |
| Hip Hop Master Class with
Leslie Scott |
SMSD was thrilled to expose Austin
dancers to a Hip Hop Master Class with Leslie Scott on Saturday,
Oct. 22, at the SMSD Mesa Studio. Approximately 60 students
participated in the 3 hour workshop—and they had a blast
studying with one of the finest instructors in the country!
Leslie Scott is currently represented by
MSA and stands behind numerous television, film, and commercial
credits. She has danced for recording artists Beyonce, Ee-De,
Angel, and Latin Froz on camera and in live performances and
performed at both the Billboard Music Awards and the Radio
Music Awards. She is a faculty member at both of Hollywood’s
top dance studios: EDGE Performing Arts Center and Millennium
Dance Complex and tours with the L.A. Dance Force National
Convention. 
Leslie's style is in demand on a global level as well. She
has instructed in New Zealand, Korea, Brazil, Mexico, Slovenia,
Croatia, Serbia, Latvia, Italy, Vienna, Germany and Canada
and has taught in 42 of the 50 United States!
Leslie is well known not only for her talents,
but her unwavering work ethic and contagious, positive energy.
She is well respected, she is real, and she always brings
dedication, heart and a smile to all that she does! All of
those who participated in her Master Class at SMSD agree.

"Passport to Dance"
Teachers will soon be working on choreography and and ordering
costumes. Students will be learning routines and practicing
their "smiles." Your job is to put the date on your
2012 schedule: June 2 at Westlake Performing Arts Center.
